LAS VEGAS – Legendary director George A. Romero’s latest motion picture, George A Romero’s Land of the Dead, a Universal Pictures and Atmosphere Entertainment MM presentation, has been selected as the CineVegas Film Festival’s closing night film. The World Premiere event will take place at the Brenden Theatres at the Palms on the evening of June 18th and will be attended by the film’s stars and filmmakers.

Written and directed by Romero, Land of the Dead stars Simon Baker, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, Robert Joy and John Leguizamo. The film is produced by Mark Canton, Peter Grunwald and Bernie Goldmann, and will be released by Universal Pictures on June 24th.

Considered by many to be the father of the modern horror film, Romero will also receive the Festival’s 2005 Vanguard Director Award as part of the evening’s activities. Mark Canton, Chairman and CEO of Atmosphere Entertainment MM and a producer of Land of the Dead, will present the award to Romero.

CineVegas’ Vanguard Director Award recognizes a filmmaker whose body of work has made an indelible contribution to the art of film. It celebrates a director whose compelling visions and groundbreaking style challenge convention and whose distinctive films are at the forefront of cinematic innovation. Previous winners include David Lynch and Julian Schnabel.

“George Romero’s groundbreaking films fused un-dead terror with social commentary to create an entirely new genre – ‘The Zombie Movie.’ They have inspired some of the greatest horror directors of all time and have garnered him a rabidly devout fan base,” stated Trevor Groth, the Festival’s Director of Programming. “CineVegas is truly honored to be able to present the World Premiere of his newest film that is destined to become another classic.”

Long recognized as the pre-eminent filmmaker of the modern horror genre, Romero’s innovative style and creativity have imprinted and inspired many successful films over the years, beginning with his first feature Night of the Living Dead (1968), which he co-wrote, directed, filmed and edited. In addition to his uncanny ability to scare, he is also known for his intelligence, innovation, and sensitivity as a filmmaker. His other projects have included Dawn of the Dead (1979), Knightriders (1981), Day of the Dead (1985), Two Eyes (1990), The Dark Half (1993) and Bruiser (2000), amongst others. Romero is presently in postproduction on Land of the Dead, starring Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento, and Robert Joy. Produced by Mark Canton, Peter Grunwald and Bernie Goldmann, George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead will be released in the US and Canada on June 24th by Universal Pictures.
