May 14 | Author: Mike Plante

Born and raised in Maui, Hawaii, Destin Daniel Cretton has written and directed 4 award-winning short films (LONGBRANCH, BARTHOLOMEW’S SONG, DEACON’S MONDAY, and SHORT TERM 12) and a feature documentary, DRAKMAR, which premiered on HBO. SHORT TERM 12 won the US Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

SHORT TERM 12 is about kids, and the grown-ups who hit them.

Tell us briefly about the film’s story, and what it means to you.

Before going to film school, I worked at a group home for at-risk teenagers. It was an experience that was very humbling and eye-opening for me, as I had never really been exposed to that world before. SHORT TERM 12 is a story that’s based on that time in my life, and has been a way for me to express some of the questions that I have wrestled with since then.

Why did you use the short film format to tell your story?

For me, short films are the perfect format to try things in filmmaking that I haven’t tried before. Because there isn’t as much risk in putting together a 20 minute film, it’s easier to take bigger chances and attempt things that are new to me. And it’s a great way to see if a story connects with an audience before committing to tackling a longer version.

Have you seen your film with an audience yet, and how was the reaction?

Yes, I’ve had the privilege to screen my film at Sundance this year, which was my first indication that the film was connecting with an audience. It has sparked some really great discussion with complete strangers, which I think is my favorite part.

What do you think the role of a film festival is?

The best thing I get out of film festivals is a chance to meet other filmmakers and see their work. My favorite festivals have done a great job in creating spaces where filmmakers are somewhat forced to meet each other (because sometimes we’re shy), and have created an environment focused on films/art rather than competition.

Do you gamble?

Only in Vegas.
