HUMPDAY, which screened in the Sure Bets section at CineVegas 2009, opens in Vegas today at Regal Village Square. From director Lynn Shelton, and starring indie favorites Mark Duplass and Josh Leonard, HUMPDAY is a buddy movie gone wild.
It’s been a decade since Ben (Duplass) and Andrew (Leonard) were the bad boys of their college campus. Ben has settled down and found a job, wife, and home. Andrew took the alternate route as a vagabond artist, skipping the globe from Chiapas to Cambodia. When Andrew shows up unannounced on Ben’s doorstep, they easily fall back into their old dynamic of macho one-upmanship. Late into the night at a wild party, the two find themselves locked in a mutual dare: to enter an amateur porn contest together. But what kind of boundary-breaking, envelope pushing porn can two straight dudes make? After the booze and “big talk” run out, only one idea remains—they will have sex together…on camera. It’s not gay; it’s beyond gay. It’s not porn; it’s art. But how exactly will it work? And more importantly, who will tell Ben’s wife?
Regal Village Square is located at 9400 W. Sahara. Showtimes are 1:15, 3:45, 6:45 and 9:15. For more info on HUMPDAY, visit the film’s website here.

HARMONY AND ME, which screened at the 2009 CineVegas Film Festival, will return to the Museum of Modern Art in New York – where it premiered in April at New Directors/New Films – for a series of screenings from September 18-24. Director Bob Byington will be present at the September 18 and 19 screenings to introduce the film and participate in a post-screening Q&A session.
HARMONY AND ME takes place in Austin, TX, where a melancholy young lyricist named Harmony refuses to let go of the heartbreak caused by a crushing breakup with his girlfriend. He remains stubbornly unhappy, reducing his story of lost love to a broken-record spiel that he repeats to friends, family and anyone else who will listen. Although his depression annoys his tough mom, Harmony’s friends, as oddball and eccentric as he, seem largely unaffected by his cultivation of misery.

LOVE AND DEBATE (formerly known as THANKS TO GRAVITY) will be released on DVD on August 25. The film, directed by Jessica Kavana, premiered at CineVegas in 2006.
Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers) stars as Jordan, a teenager from Miami who struggles with tragedy and love while dealing with the pressures of school and family life. The film also stars Sean Astin (Lord of The Rings, Adam Rodriguez (CSI Miami, The Final Season, Rudy), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes), Austin Nichols (One Tree Hill), Rachel Miner (Californication), Joaquim De Almeida (24, Clear and Present Danger), and Brian Greenberg (October Road, One Tree Hill).

Culled from hundreds of hours of talk shows, late shows, reality shows, celebrity shows, award shows, life-style shows, game shows, and shows about shows, “Venerations” takes TV applause to its logical end: no object or context, just the pure build up and downswing of collective clapping and hooting, an on-going show made up of only the audience. The installation will be at the Chelsea Art Museum from August 13 through September 5. The museum is located at 556 W. 22nd Street at 11th Avenue in New York City. Visit the museum’s website for more info.
The project is from Abou Farman, who produced VEGAS: BASED ON A TRUE STORY, which played at the 2009 festival.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARRIS MALDEN, which world premiered at CineVegas in 2008, is now available on Verizon FIOS and Charter Cable OnDemand for $3.99.
The debut feature by the filmmakers known as Sweaty Robot is a playful yet poignant labor of love that offers a fresh take on friendship, loyalty, and bushy mustaches. No one in the neighborhood, not even his best friend Paul or his brother Melvin, has the heart to tell Harris how ridiculous he looks with the thick, black lie about his lip. Everything is fine in Harris’ world – until Paul brings an outsider to his 25th birthday party who immediately calls out Harris’ hairy imposter, leaving the young man and his friends to deal with the fallout of his open secret.

EXPLICIT ILLS, which played at the 2008 Festival and stars 2008 Half-Life Award Honoree Rosario Dawson, is now available to rent or purchase on DVD.
In the harsh streets of Philadelphia, the lives of strangers intersect in the debut feature from veteran indie actor Mark Webber. EXPLICIT ILLS is a bold and moving semi-autobiographical tale that crosscuts between the many people—adults, teenagers, and children alike—who struggle in the face of poverty, pot dealers, human connection, and (practically) inhumane consumer policy. In his quest to show compassion, even in the shoddiest of landscapes, Webber juxtaposes the gritty despair of the Philadelphia streets with the heartfelt aspirations of the many sympathetic and endearing characters within.
The film can be purchased or rented from anywhere in the US. Check out the film’s website for more info.
